The Distance Between Us

Book Title: The Distance Between Us
Author: Kasie West
Number of Pages: 320
Rating: 5
Genres:  Young Adult, Romance, Contemporary
Books like it: After Hello by Lisa Mangum
My favorite quote:

“This is me facing failure. This is me putting everything on the line even though I know I might lose. And I'm terrified. But like you said, anything worth having is worth the risk.”

Brief Synopsis from Goodreads:

Seventeen-year-old Caymen Meyers studies the rich like her own personal science experiment, and after years of observation she’s pretty sure they’re only good for one thing—spending money on useless stuff, like the porcelain dolls in her mother’s shop.

So when Xander Spence walks into the store to pick up a doll for his grandmother, it only takes one glance for Caymen to figure out he’s oozing rich. Despite his charming ways and that he’s one of the first people who actually gets her, she’s smart enough to know his interest won’t last. Because if there’s one thing she’s learned from her mother’s warnings, it’s that the rich have a short attention span. But Xander keeps coming around, despite her best efforts to scare him off. And much to her dismay, she's beginning to enjoy his company.

She knows her mom can’t find out—she wouldn’t approve. She’d much rather Caymen hang out with the local rocker who hasn’t been raised by money. But just when Xander’s attention and loyalty are about to convince Caymen that being rich isn’t a character flaw, she finds out that money is a much bigger part of their relationship than she’d ever realized. And that Xander’s not the only one she should’ve been worried about.

My Summary:

I just gave this book 5 stars. I am smacking my head against my laptop in misery right now. This book was so extremely CHEESY. But for some reason I loved this book so much! There was just something alluring to me about the cheesy but adorable romance between Xander and Caymen.

Usually, I am not a romantic kind of girl. While other girls have their noses buried in the latest Nicholas Sparks book, I am over there in the action section falling in love with books with spies like Ethan Hunt (yes, I am a Mission Impossible Fan) or super geniuses like Tony Stark. (I know these are movie comparisons. I got Iron Man 3, my favoritest movie ever, for Christmas, and I watch it like three times a day.)

Anyway, the point is, I never get into romance junk, and I never purposely read them.
Unless my friend begs me.
Amd then I give in and put it on my wish list.
And then I get it for Christmas.
And then the cover is so gorgeous……

This book, to most, and DEFINITELY to the usual me, would seem very cheesy. But for some reason I fell in love with this book. Caymen was very funny and I felt like I could relate with her in many ways. (Except that hot boys actually pay attention to her…..)  Xander… is my new fictional crush. At first, I thought he was a huge jerk but then I realized how amazing was. And then I realized he didn’t actually exist.

My Synopsis:
This story is about a girl named Caymen Meyers. She is extremely poor, living with her mom in their apartment. Below their apartment is the  doll store where Caymen spends half of her life, working to pay off her mom’s debts. Although she wishes she had something better to do with her time, and she is released from most of her school time in order to work, Caymen is determined to support her mother. After her father bailed on them when Caymen was born, it is just them carrying the weight. Caymen’s life is pretty average and normal.

I’m the queen of having done nothing so I’m pretty sure you’ve far outdone me.

Then one morning, she gets a customer that changes her life. A rich boy named Xander Spence, that is there to buy a doll for his grandmother. As he keeps entering her life more and more, trying to get her attention, Caymen is weary. She knows that the rich boys have a small attention span and Xander will break her heart someday. Despite her tendency to be cautious, Caymen can’t help but feel her heart slam into her rib cage every time he talks to her.

“I slide my feet onto the seat next to him, my ankle brushing against his thigh. “No shallowness of breath? No rapidly beating heart?”
He rests one hand on my foot as he continues to mess with his phone. His eyes meet mine in amusement. “Are those the indicators? I might have an issue after all.”

As she falls deeper and deeper in love with Xander, something  keeps holding her back. Then, when something happens that makes her question her feelings for him, Caymen must decide if the pretty rich boy is there to stay or if he will steal her heart and run away.

“Caymen?”
“Yes?”
“You look terrified. Does this scare you?”
“More than anything.”
“Why?”
“Because I didn’t bring my mints.”
“And now the real answer . . .”
“Because I’m afraid that once you catch me, the game’s over.”

Two orders of buisness: Caymen and Xander. Xander is amazing, so I will leave him for last.

Caymen:

“A lot of people don’t get my humor. My mom calls it dry humor. I think that means “not funny,” but it also means I’m the only one who ever knows it’s a joke.”

I loved this girl! She had this sarcastic humor that was pretty cheesy but sometimes I thought it was pretty funny. She is distrustful of Xander and does not immediately fall for him like some YA characters in the world today. Another thing I loved about her was the fact that she was not perfect, and some parts of her were boring. I hate characters that are so flawlessly perfect that they aren’t even believable.  Last thing I loved was her ability to be selfless almost always. Sometimes Xander didn’t approve of it, but she was always thinking of her mother before herself.

“Is that your subtle way of saying you missed me last week?"

"I've missed my hot chocolate. I just think of you as the guy who brings it to me. Sometimes I forget your name and call you hot chocolate guy.”

Xander:

I loved Xander for so many reasons. First off, he did very subtle but sweet things for Caymen, like taking her places for their career days, bringing her hot chocolate every morning and walking her to school. He didn’t act too stuck up most of the book, and he was always thinking of ways to cheer Caymen up. Bottom line: I loved him.

“My older brother, Lucas, is twenty and away at college."
"Those are pretty normal names."
"Normal?"
"No Chets or Wellingtons or anything."
He raises one eyebrow. "Do you know any Wellingtons?"
"Of course not, but you probably do."
"No, actually I don't.”

Sneak Peek/ Snippet (NEW!!!)

I am always trying to think up new things for my reviews, and I had this idea to give you my favorite non-spoiler scene from this book. So, because I am just that awesome, I chose a really great scene to share with you. I am going to call it the Kitchen Treasure Hunt. Enjoy!

“Have you ever looked inside these cupboards in your life?” I ask.
“Of course.”
“Let’s play a game, then. Skye names a kitchen item. Whoever finds it first wins.”
“Wins what?”
“Bragging rights.”
“This is my house. I think I’ll win.”
“Prove it, rich boy. Tess isn’t here to make your bottle for you.”
“Oh, you are so on.”
I smile. I know my way around a kitchen. And if a cook set it up she would be smart and practical. Cooking utensils by the stove, glasses by the sink. I have this. I nod to Skye.
“Okay. We will start easy. Spatula.”
Xander goes to the island and starts tearing through the drawers. I go to the stove and pull open the drawers on each side of it. Right away I find the spatula and turn around, holding it up.
“First round to Caymen,” Skye says, and Xander snaps his head up to look at me. He growls.
“Okay, second item. Cereal bowl.”
I give a grunt of indignation. “So not fair. You knew he’d know where that is. “ And he does. Cupboard beside the pantry.
“Tiebreaker,” Skye calls out. “Find me a strainer.”
I laugh at the look on Xander’s face. It’s a look that says, I don’t even know what that is. I race towards the sink. It will be underneath one of the cupboards there. When I reach for the cupboard, a pair of hands grab my waist and pull me back.  Then he cuts around me and opens the cupboard I was going for. I jolt forward and settle next to him, trying to push him aside with my body.
“Cheater,” he says.
“Me? You’re the cheater.” He’s standing firm. I can’t push over him and he is searching the shelves.
“It’s like a bowl with holes in it,” Skye calls out.
“My own best friend is against me.” I wrap my hands around Xander’s waist and try to pull him back. The kettle on the stove whistles and Skye removes it from the burner.
“Got it!” Xander holds the strainer up in the air. I jump up and try to grab it, but he keeps it just out of my reach. When I try to pull his arm down, he puts his free arm around my shoulders, pinning me against his chest. “And the winner is Xander.”
“Cheaters! The both of you!”
He clears his throat. “I’d like to dedicate this win to my supreme knowledge of the kitchen layouts and tools therein that I have used on many occasions. If it wasn’t for-” he stops mid-sentence and says, “Oh, hi, Mom.”

In Conclusion:
In conclusion, if you don’t like romances like me, and you don’t think you would like this book, I still think you should give it a try. Xander and Caymen are a cute couple, and overall, this was a cute story. It was really cheesy at parts and sometimes I might have wanted to strangle the author, but I just could not help liking this book.

School Spirits

15826934Book Title: School Spirits
Author: Rachel Hawkins
Number of Pages: 297
Rating: 3.5 stars
Genres: Young Adult, YA Fiction, YA Romance, Magic-Fantasy,
Books like it: Hex Hall by Rachel Hawkins
My favorite quote:
“I don’t know what heaven smells like, but if it doesn’t smell like freshly baked cookies, I will be really disappointed.”
Brief Synopsis from Goodreads:

Fifteen-year-old Izzy Brannick was trained to fight monsters. For centuries, her family has hunted magical creatures. But when Izzy’s older sister vanishes without a trace while on a job, Izzy's mom decides they need to take a break.

Izzy and her mom move to a new town, but they soon discover it’s not as normal as it appears. A series of hauntings has been plaguing the local high school, and Izzy is determined to prove her worth and investigate. But assuming the guise of an average teenager is easier said than done. For a tough girl who's always been on her own, it’s strange to suddenly make friends and maybe even have a crush.

Can Izzy trust her new friends to help find the secret behind the hauntings before more people get hurt?

Rachel Hawkins' delightful spin-off brings the same wit and charm as the New York Times best-selling Hex Hall series. Get ready for more magic, mystery and romance!
My Summary:

A huge disappointment considering the potential from the author. Intriguing, and an average read.

When I saw that my library FINALLY had School Spirits by Rachel Hawkins, I freaked out, having loved the Hex Hall series. Unfortunately, there is only a mention of Sophie in this book, and absolutely no Archer, which was disappointing.

And then you have Dex.
Dex was like, the complete opposite of Archer. Which was good, because some authors try to write different  series and all of their characters sound the exact same. Dex had some humor, but it wasn’t really the sarcastic humor of Archer Cross. Also, Dex was definitely shyer and showed his feelings for Izzy a lot faster than Archer did for Sophie.
Wait, who is Izzy? You might remember her being mentioned in the Hex Hall series. She is a Brannick, and also Sophie’s cousin. All Izzy is accustomed to is fighting vampires and fairies and other Prodigium creatures. Then one day her mom comes to her and tells her that she has decided it is time for Izzy to try and handle a case on her own. It is a case that takes place at Ideal High School. The thing Izzy needs to find? A ghost that is haunting the school. In order to do this, Izzy must enroll at the highschool and pretend to be a normal human being.
I snagged my black jacket from one of the hooks, and as I did, I caught a flash of movement.
Torin.
In the mirror, he leaned against the wall behind me. “Nervous?” he said, grinning.
Glancing down the hall towards the kitchen, I whispered, “No.”
His grin got bigger. “Yes, you are. You’re a Brannick, a Queen Among Women, and you’re scared of going to school. When really, it’s the school that should be scared of you.”

Izzy has never been a regular girl. She doesn’t know about the square root of 36, she has never even heard of Shakespeare, and she definitely doesn’t know about the drama. No type of training could have prepared her for the relationships, the fights, and all the excitement that regular humans go through every day. Before she can find the ghost, she has to make friends and remember one thing:
Humans and Brannicks can never be real friends.

Then Izzy meets Dex, a regular human boy that does weird things to her feelings. She could have sworn that when she shook his hand on the first day of school, she felt a tiny pulse of magic, and she immediately suspects him as an undercover Prodigium. But as she voices her concerns with her mother, her mom tells her that it might not be magic that Izzy is feeling when she is around Dex. Whatever the feeling is, Izzy knows that she needs to solve this case before things get out of hand.

Maybe Dex wasn’t Prodigium. But if that was true, then what the heck was I feeling? No matter what everyone kept saying, I knew that little hum of magic when I touched him wasn’t just hormones.
I turned my head and looked at him grinning at his Nana, his silver bracelet winking in the sun, his coat just impossibly, stupidly purple.
Or did I just want Dex to be Prodigium because the idea of liking him was a lot  scarier?

When strange things start happening to kids around the school, Izzy goes to investigate. When her friend Romy finds a newspaper article about family relationships in the school, Izzy realizes that the incidents are connected. This isn’t a school prankster, it is a ghost that wants revenge. Izzy must find the ghost and stop her before her friends get hurt.
I really did enjoy this book. Really, I did. But it just wasn’t as awesome as Hex Hall, in my opinion. Maybe because this is a STANDALONE *alert: If you don’t like being devastated that a good book won’t have a sequel, this wouldn’t be the best one to read.*

I kind of felt like this book was just a YA Romance with some paranormal stuff that was forced into it. It wasn’t Hawkins best work. Sorry. That is all.

Divergent Exclusive First Clip: Tattoos

Despite the horribleness of Allegiant, I am still totally excited for the movie, Divergent. This clip that aired last night is kind of cheesy acting up until the end, but maybe that was because the song made the situation kind of dramatic and cheesy. I like the song itself, but I really hope that it isn't actually in the movie.

Let the Sky Fall

13445306Book Title: Let the Sky Fall
Author: Shannon Messenger
Number of Pages: 416
Rating: 3 stars
Genres: YA Romance
Books like it: Reboot by Amy Tintera
My favorite quote: “Infinite possibilities. And none of them matter.
What matters is here and now.”

Brief Synopsis from Goodreads:

Seventeen-year-old Vane Weston has no idea how he survived the category five tornado that killed his parents. And he has no idea if the beautiful, dark-haired girl who’s swept through his dreams every night since the storm is real. But he hopes she is.

Seventeen-year-old Audra is a sylph, an air elemental. She walks on the wind, can translate its alluring songs, and can even coax it into a weapon with a simple string of commands. She’s also a guardian—Vane’s guardian—and has sworn an oath to protect Vane at all costs. Even if it means sacrificing her own life.

When a hasty mistake reveals their location to the enemy who murdered both of their families, Audra’s forced to help Vane remember who he is. He has a power to claim—the secret language of the West Wind, which only he can understand. But unlocking his heritage will also unlock the memory Audra needs him to forget. And their greatest danger is not the warriors coming to destroy them—but the forbidden romance that’s grown between them.

My Summary:

Another book to add to your super-cheesy romance list. Not worth reading.

This song was stuck in my head the WHOLE time.

This book was very.... Eh. The plot and overall idea of it was pretty good, but the romance was very dry and unbelievable. For me, what makes a romance believable is it's imperfect-ness. Audra and Vane have a forbidden romance going on, and in four days they go from not hardly knowing each other to feeling like they are soul mates. I don't know about you, but I think that is VERY short amount of time to fall in love.

Not to mention that Vane has some weird and disturbing thoughts about Audra, along the lines of "sexy black tank" "She's so hot in that tank" and "When I'm king, I will make sure she always wears that shirt." Typical boys think like that, I know. Still, I hate it when boys see girls as a sexy piece of art instead of respecting them as a person. I feel like half of Vane's attraction to Audra was because she was extremely beautiful.

This is another problem I have with YA romances. I don't find it believable that the girl is beautiful and the guy is too. In real life, our princes and princesses are going to be the imperfect people that we find perfect. They aren't going to be "hot" or "gorgeous." We are going to fall in love with them because of their personality, because they make us laugh, and they treat us nicely. YA romance is brainwashing teens into thinking that a best quality in a guy is if he is "hot." When he thinks of you as "sexy" and "gorgeous" and doesn't respect you, that is not a good person to fall in love with.

In conclusion, (and yes, I know this review was relatively short....) Don't even bother reading this UNLESS you are a romance fan.

That is all. :)

Cress: Chapters 1-5 Mini Review

13206828

Mini Review: A sneak peek at Cress: Chapters 1-5

*This book is FREE on Kindle!!!

For all of you who have read Marissa Meyer’s amazing books, Cinder and Scarlet, you can probably barely wait for Cress, which is to be released in February 2014.

Guess what? The first five chapters are NOW available. FOR FREE!!!!! AHH!

Naturally, I read these chapters within 15 minutes, because they are relatively short. However, they made me very excited for Cress.

FYI: She has a crush on Thorne. Like a huge one. Cress has been trapped in a satellite for seven years. She’s been watching him from afar, falling in love with his smile and his “bad” actions, that have more than meets the eye.  She’s kind of like a creepy stalker damsel in distress.

My favorite chapter was CHAPTER THREE! Mostly because Scarlet and Wolf are my favorite non-official couple.

Before I give you the sneak peek, let me just tell you that this is definitely worth reading if you are excited for Cress.

“It's all right," said Wolf. "You loved her. I would have felt the same if someone wanted to erase Scarlet's identity and give it to Levana's army.

Scarlet stiffened, feeling heat rushing into her cheeks. He certainly wasn't insinuating....

"Aaaaw," squealed Iko. "Did Wolf just say he loves Scarlet? That's so cute!"

Scarlet cringed. "He did not-that wasn't-" She balled her fists against her sides. "Can we get back to these soldiers that are being rounded up, please?"

"Is she blushing? She sounds like she's blushing."

"She's blushing," Thorne confirmed, shuffling the cards. "Actually, Wolf is looking a little flustered.”

Allegiant: Full Length Review *SPOILER VERSION*

17383918
Book Title: Allegiant
Author: Veronica Roth
Number of Pages: 526
Rating: 2 stars
Genres: Sci-fi, Dystopian, Young Adult Fiction, Romance
Books like it: Legend by Marie Lu
My favorite quote:
“There are so many ways to be brave in this world. Sometimes bravery involves laying down your life for something bigger than yourself, or for someone else. Sometimes it involves giving up everything you have ever known, or everyone you have ever loved, for the sake of something greater.

But sometimes it doesn't.

Sometimes it is nothing more than gritting your teeth through pain, and the work of every day, the slow walk toward a better life.

That is the sort of bravery I must have now.”

Brief Synopsis from Goodreads:

The faction-based society that Tris Prior once believed in is shattered—fractured by violence and power struggles and scarred by loss and betrayal. So when offered a chance to explore the world past the limits she’s known, Tris is ready. Perhaps beyond the fence, she and Tobias will find a simple new life together, free from complicated lies, tangled loyalties, and painful memories.

But Tris’s new reality is even more alarming than the one she left behind. Old discoveries are quickly rendered meaningless. Explosive new truths change the hearts of those she loves. And once again, Tris must battle to comprehend the complexities of human nature—and of herself—while facing impossible choices about courage, allegiance, sacrifice, and love.

Told from a riveting dual perspective, Allegiant, by #1 New York Times best-selling author Veronica Roth, brings the Divergent series to a powerful conclusion while revealing the secrets of the dystopian world that has captivated millions of readers in Divergent and Insurgent.
My Summary:

*If you have not read Allegiant, ABSOLUTELY DO NOT READ THIS REVIEW.*

Okay, so I figure I have given you all two months to read this book, and I can scream and rant and rave and sob my eyes out.

WHY DOES THE WORLD HATE ME?!?!?!?!?!?!?!

You all know HOW BADLY I wanted this book to come out, and HOW BADLY I just wanted a happy ending.

DID I GET IT?

No. In fact, I got quite the opposite. A heartless, unfeeling, totally UNFAIR ending that made me sob and cry and want to throw sharp things. I stood in my room for a long time after that, numb with shock.

WHAT JUST HAPPENED?

Okay, you know what? Even though TRIS DYING was the worst ending I could have possibly imagined, and it was my least favorite part of the book, I had other problems with this book. Major problems.

For one, it was no where near as great as the first book, which will always be my favorite. In some parts, it was better than Insurgent, which was also not very well written.

My second problem: I could not tell whether Tobias and Tris were speaking. Their voices sounded exactly the same to me, and unless Tobias referred to Tris, or Tris referred to him, after a while, I had to rewind and check who was talking. It was very annoying and disappointing that Roth could not give her characters different voices.

My third problem: What was outside the fence. Lots of readers loved this idea and thought it was a stroke of pure genius. Others thought it was stupid and cheesy and super un-cool. In case you haven’t guessed it already, I am one of the latter. I just didn’t really like the fact that they were all experiments to get the perfect system for the human race. It was stupid and unbelievable to me and I think Roth could have come up with a WAAAAAAAAAAAAY better idea. And then there is that part where they tell Tobias he is genetically damaged.

Wait.

What?!!?!?

How dare you!!!!! That is rude to tell one of the best male characters ever that he is damaged. Of course, if you want to break up with Tris, I happen to be single.
No? Okay. Guess I’m not your type.

Moving on.

Nita. What is wrong with this character? I kind of felt like Roth wanted to introduce a love triangle but she wasn’t sure how to add one, so it just fell flat. Like, she thought: What do I do with this character? Her relationship with Tobias just isn’t working. I know! I will make her a traitor! Bibbidy bobbidy bingo! Oh wait…. just kidding. She isn’t a traitor anymore.

Me: I am so confused.
Roth: Just go with it.
Me: But- but-
Roth: Shhh. Don’t overthink things.

And then at the very end: Roth making me think that everything was going to be fine, and Tris would be an awesome hero.

What.

Freaking.

Cruelty.

Tris makes it all the way through the death serum, presses the button… and YES!!! FINALLY A VICTORY!!!! Right?

Wrong.

FYI: She is dead. News flash: Her killer gets his memory erased and THEY LET HIM LIVE. AND PRETEND LIKE HE DIDN’T JUST KILL THEIR BEST FRIEND. My other problem with the ending is this: Caleb is the traitor. He betrayed his parents, Tris, and everyone he loved. Why not let him redeem himself? Then we would feel like he was a good person again. Instead, Tris dies for him and he ends up being a character that I really hate.

I just thought that this book had a LOT of plot holes. Sure, Roth is good at developing her characters and bringing emotion- I will give her that. But she really, really, sucks at building a world. There were SO many questions I had that went unanswered. Is this just happening in the United States? If it is, why aren’t other countries coming to help or stop it?  Why had the GDs not rebelled and put a stop to this WAAAAY before Tris was born? It just does not make sense.

And another thing: With Tris’s death, I just felt that David killed her so easily. He was in a wheelchair for crying out loud, and had probably never fired a gun in his life. How could he get lucky and hit her twice in fatal spots? How could he possibly know what she planned to do? And wasn’t she one of his precious GPs? Why would he want to kill her?

Conclusions:

Sorry that this review was so short, and that I only focused on what I hated. I feel like Divergent was perfect, and the other two were just crap. The ending made no sense to me. I felt like Roth just wanted a really shocking ending so she decided to kill Tris. She shot herself in the foot with this because now I know that she is an author that WILL kill her main character, and I don’t want to read books like that. This book had great parts, but most of it just sucked. I loved Divergent and will hold it in my heart forever, but I am never re-reading Insurgent or Allegiant ever again.
