******MAJOR SPOILERS IF YOU HAVE NOT READ LEGEND OR PRODIGY******

Book Title: Champion
Author: Marie Lu
Number of Pages: 369
Rating: 4.5 stars
Genres: Dystopian, YA Fiction, Young Adult, Action-Adventure
Books like it: Allegiant by Veronica Roth
My favorite quote:

“Then Day reaches out and touches my hand with his. He encloses it in a handshake. And just like that, I am linked with him again, I feel the pulse of our bond and his- tory and love through our hands, like a wave of magic, the return of a long-lost friend. Of something meant to be. The feeling brings tears to my eyes. Perhaps we can take a step forward together.
“Hi,” he says. “I’m Daniel.”
“Hi,” I reply. “I’m June.”

Brief Synopsis from Goodreads:

The explosive finale to Marie Lu’s New York Times bestselling LEGEND trilogy—perfect for fans of THE HUNGER GAMES and DIVERGENT!

He is a Legend.
She is a Prodigy.
Who will be Champion?

June and Day have sacrificed so much for the people of the Republic—and each other—and now their country is on the brink of a new existence. June is back in the good graces of the Republic, working within the government’s elite circles as Princeps Elect while Day has been assigned a high level military position. But neither could have predicted the circumstances that will reunite them once again. Just when a peace treaty is imminent, a plague outbreak causes panic in the Colonies, and war threatens the Republic’s border cities. This new strain of plague is deadlier than ever, and June is the only one who knows the key to her country’s defense. But saving the lives of thousands will mean asking the one she loves to give up everything he has. With heart-pounding action and suspense, Marie Lu’s bestselling trilogy draws to a stunning conclusion.

An amazing finale to the Legend trilogy with heartbreaks, romance, and kick-butt action scenes.

My review:

******MAJOR SPOILERS IF YOU HAVE NOT READ LEGEND OR PRODIGY******

"Sometimes, the sun sets earlier. Days don’t last forever, you know. But I’ll fight as hard as I can. I can promise you that.”

Wait. One second...this series is now over? WHY??? WHY??? MARIE LU PLEASE HURRY UP AND WRITE SOMETHING ELSE....... This became my favorite series about five seconds after I read Allegiant. Speaking of Allegiant.... oh wait... please excuse me while I try to put on my brave face.

Okay. I'm back now. Anyways, this book was not like Allegiant's ending, I can promise you that. The ending was bittersweet, but Marie Lu did not take her fans hearts and stomp on them, unlike some authors... ahem Veronica Roth.
I think this was the best final book to a series that I have ever read. Lu has really progressed with her writing. I mean, Legend and Prodigy were good, okay. Heck, they were amazing. And that Prodigy ending.... OMG. But this book was definitely my favorite.

******MAJOR SPOILERS IF YOU HAVE NOT READ LEGEND OR PRODIGY******

First order of business.... June and Day.

A picture of Day and June kissing in Legend. Drawn by Marie Lu.

I totally shipped them from their first meeting in Legend. Tess can just leave. Well, wait. I still love Tess, but June... you just can't compete with June. They are a perfect match... perfect girl meets bad boy. Day sure knows how to get the butterflies going, man.

You drive me insane, June. You're the scariest, most clever, bravest person I know, and sometimes I can't catch my breath because I'm trying so hard to keep up. There will never be another like you. You realize that, don't you? Billions of people will come and go in this world, but there will never be another like you.

And I am going to shatter this nice little moment. In case any of you have forgotten, we left off in Prodigy with Day's shocking secret: He's dying. Does he decide to tell June? No.

What’s the point of keeping in touch with the girl you’re crazy about, when you’re dying?

He says this at the very beginning of the book, when we learn that he has not spoken to June in about eight months. Even though they have very easy ways to communicate, both of them are both scared to be the one that breaks the silence between them. Day is still devastatingly in love with June, where she thinks he no longer cares about her. I wanted to speak to her right then. I probably would have been like:
JUNE!!! WAKE UP AND PULL YOUR HEAD OUTTA THE CLOUDS! THE GUY IS IN LOVE WITH YOU AND HE'S DYING!!!!
And then I would've added a slap for good measure.

Still, the romance does have some development, and we get some very satisfying conversations (see above) and some PG rated scenes.

Order of Business #2: The war.

News flash: When there is a war going on in a book, it means you will get some very awesome kick-butt action scenes! Especially when you're heroine is totally boss.

The Avengers - Black Widow

With their soldiers stretched thin, and their confidence fading away with each passing day, the Republic is failing to fight against the Colonies. Antarctica is their only remaining ally, and unless the Republic finds a cure for the plague that sweeps across their nation, Antarctica refuses to help them.
Day and June might have had the key to saving their country all along.

Order of Business #3:

Commander Jameson.
FYI: I hate you.
WHAT IN THE NAME OF &*%$#@ IS WRONG WITH YOU?!?!?! YOU *&%$#@!!! HOW DARE YOU ORDER THE MURDER OF METIAS AND HOW DARE YOU TRY TO KILL JUNE AND DAY.

Breathe, Sarah. Breathe.
 And I am calm again.
Let's just get this through y'all people's heads: I don't like this character. Not at all.

Order of Business #4

Anden.

Get away from June. Just BAAAAAAAAAAAAACKKK away. I'm sorry for all you Anden lovers, but she is Day's. He saw her first and he called dibs.
Don't violate the Man Code.
He kissed her first and he's way more emotional and romantic than you are dude so go find a corner to cry in and a soft teddy bear.

Conclusion:

I feel like I'm saying goodbye to an old friend. I loved this series. If you haven't read it, despite the fact that I put bold "Major Spoiler" warnings all over this- and that I just spoiled books one and two for you- read it anyway. You will not regret it. This is an amazing series for action lovers, dystopian lovers, and romance lovers.
This book was inspiring at some parts and played with my emotions. It takes a good writer to make me feel connected with my characters. So I congratulate you, Marie Lu. Great job. You created a story that I will remember forever.
*As this book leaves, standing ovation occurs.*

The Runaway King

15703770Book Title: The Runaway King
Author: Jennifer Nielsen

Number of Pages: 331
Rating: 4 stars
Genres: YA Fiction, Action-Adventure
Books like it: Narnia by C.S. Lewis
My Favorite Quote:
“You wouldn't want to be king of my country," I said.
"Why is that?"
"Well, you're rather fat. I doubt you'd fit onto my throne.”

Brief Synopsis from Goodreads:
Spoiler Alert: Do not read ahead if you haven't read the False Prince.
A kingdom teetering on the brink of destruction. A king gone missing. Who will survive? Find out in the highly anticipated sequel to Jennifer A. Nielsen's blockbuster THE FALSE PRINCE!

Just weeks after Jaron has taken the throne, an assassination attempt forces him into a deadly situation. Rumors of a coming war are winding their way between the castle walls, and Jaron feels the pressure quietly mounting within Carthya. Soon, it becomes clear that deserting the kingdom may be his only hope of saving it. But the further Jaron is forced to run from his identity, the more he wonders if it is possible to go too far. Will he ever be able to return home again? Or will he have to sacrifice his own life in order to save his kingdom?

The stunning second installment of The Ascendance Trilogy takes readers on a roller-coaster ride of treason and murder, thrills and peril, as they journey with the Runaway King!

A great sequel to the False Prince, with pirates and jam-packed with action.

Two words: Holy Pirates.
pirates of the caribbean gif | Tumblr

This book was awesome! We got a refreshing taste of Sage/Jaron's sarcastic humor. After that stunning ending that Nielsen pulled off in the False Prince, I was very excited to read this book. In this book, Jaron has just become the king of Carthya. But when his kingdom is threatened to go to war, Jaron is now burdened with the decision that could save the kingdom or destroy it.

His only sensible option: To join the pirates as Sage and try and destroy their pirate king. If he fails, the whole kingdom falls with him.

Secret alert: I have a crush on Jaron. Imogen can just leave, even though I love her. There. I admit it.

This book was a great read, with Jaron and Imogen's budding romance, (COME ON DUDE JUST TELL THE GIRL YOU LOVE HER ALREADY. Sheesh.) Jaron being a sarcastic jerk that you just gotta love, and a whole bunch of swashbuckling action that will keep you on your toes. This would be a great series to read to the kids. It keeps you entertained from the first page until the last page. I am sad and excited for the trilogy to end when book three comes out in the spring.

HOLD ON TIGHT THIS BOOK IS AWESOME!!!!!!
Overall, read this book.

Forgotten

Book Title: Forgotten
Author: Cat Patrick
9415951Number of Pages: 304
Rating: 1 star
Genres: YA Fiction, YA Romance
Books like it: Originals by Cat Patrick

Brief Synopsis from Goodreads:

Each night at precisely 4:33 am, while sixteen-year-old London Lane is asleep, her memory of that day is erased. In the morning, all she can "remember" are events from her future. London is used to relying on reminder notes and a trusted friend to get through the day, but things get complicated when a new boy at school enters the picture. Luke Henry is not someone you'd easily forget, yet try as she might, London can't find him in her memories of things to come.

When London starts experiencing disturbing flashbacks, or flash-forwards, as the case may be, she realizes it's time to learn about the past she keeps forgetting-before it destroys her future.

My review:

Like Originals, a potentially cool plot is centered around a cheesy romance with lots of plot holes.

Let's pretend for a moment that you forget everything about yourself and your life every night. That  your memory is wiped clean. But, from reading some very {undetailed} notes that you left for yourself, you know enough to go through the next day, and the next after that.

Here are the holes:
  • How would you fall in love with the same boy over and over again, just by reading notes about him? How is there even a chance you could fall in love with the same boy that many times?
  • How would you remember your name, and that you have this memory problem? Wouldn't you be suspicious that your mom was lying to you?
London Lane, everybody, fits these descriptions.
  • Also, she seems to remember her best friend and everyone else at school EXCEPT the boy she is in love with....
  • How did she remember where her classes were?
  • Regarding classes, in one of her notes, London says "Read chapters 1-2 in your math book. There is a test today." Erm... you cannot take a math test by reading the chapters a few hours before school, can you? No.
Her notes are not at ALL detailed enough to know everything she needs to remember. Let's  put aside the holes with the memory issue and focus on London's rash actions now. There are a few minor spoilers in the next paragraph.

London falls in love with a boy named Luke at literally first sight. They start dating blah blah yuck. Anyway, they get in a fight one night, and she completely THROWS AWAY all of her notes about him.... just because she was angry with him.
Which, in case you remember.... notes are her only way to remember things.
So she will completely forget him.
Because of one stupid fight.
Does this seem stupid and irrational to you? It totally does to me. And then he writes her a note telling her everything, because she forgot all about him. AND SHE JUST BELIEVES HIM!!! This girl needs some serious brains.

Sorry, but I do not think this book is worth reading.

Next Week... FOR ACTUAL REALSIES

When I promised last week that I would post all those book reviews, I forgot that this week was Dress Rehearsal week for the play that I was in. Dress Rehearsal week means that Thursday and Friday were performance nights, and on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, I never got home until late at night.
It was tiring and I never had any free time.
So I apologize, and here is this week's REAL weekly update, because I do not have anything to do this week and can post all these reviews this week. Reviews coming up and what I am currently reading is up ahead.

Blackout

17332588Book Title: Blackout
Author: Robison Wells
Number of Pages: 432
Genres: YA Dystopia, Sci-fi, Thriller, Action-Adventure
Books like it: The Fifth Wave by Rick Yancey
Review: 4 stars

Brief Synopsis from Goodreads:

Laura and Alec are trained terrorists.

Jack and Aubrey are high school students.

There was no reason for them to ever meet.

But now, a mysterious virus is spreading throughout America, infecting teenagers with impossible powers. And these four are about to find their lives intertwined in a complex web of deception, loyalty, and catastrophic danger—where one wrong choice could trigger an explosion that ends it all

My Summary:

A fast-paced thriller that had an X-men like plot that had a few holes.

This book definitely reminded me of the X-men movies. Basic plot: A virus is spreading throughout the world that infects teenages with inhuman powers (i.e. shoot fire out of their hands, a perfect memory, invisibility.) Some teenagers infected with these powers remain quiet, while others, like Laura and Alec, use them to terrorize the country. While they are destroying dams, national monuments, and many more important things, America goes into a panic and starts rounding all the teenagers up  and testing them for the virus. If you test Negative, you go home. If you test Positive, the future may be dark.

Aubrey has a secret. She can vanish, or turn invisible, and she doesn't understand why. When soldiers come to her school dance trying to find kids like her, she knows she has to hide.
But even an invisible girl can't hide forever.

Jack is just a normal kid, afraid of the world that is crashing down around him. When he tests Positive for the virus, he doesn't understand. He can't do amazing things like all the other kids can. Digging deep within himself, Jack might find some dark secrets that he shouldn't be looking for.

Alec has a very out of the ordinary power. He can manipulate the minds of those around him and implant new memories into their brain about literally anything. (The thing I wish would have been explained in the book is how the heck does his power work? It could have been a cool concept for the author to explain.)

Laura has inhuman strength and speed, and she is a terrorist. (Along with Alec, she helps destroy the nation with her powers.) She seems quite indecisive about whose side she actually wants to be on.

So yes, this book has an epic plot, and it is a very interesting idea. The only problem for me was that the author did not explain some things in the book very well, like how the virus worked, why it only affected some people, and oh yes, WHERE THE HECK DID THE STUPID THING COME FROM? I really hope this is not a standalone because it had a very confusing ending. Another thing that upset me about this book is that it lacked action. I mean, it still had some action, but based off of the potential that the story had, it should have had a lot more. Most of the time the characters are at a military base, and they don't do much there, except have the soldiers treat them like dirt.

If you read this book, in random parts there will be a one page chapter about the life of some girl that we don't know. It's a status update, a blog post, whatever. It is really confusing and distracting, but it will be explained later, I promise.

Overall: I liked this book, and I really hope it continues in a series. It will satisfy those of you who love action, and disappoint those who like romance.

My Bookish Habits (#1)

My Bookish Habits (#1)

I decided I would try this, on top of Friend Review Fridays and Comment War Mondays that I have forgotten to do in the last few weeks. This is more of a personal post, and I'm just going to quickly tell one of my book habits. My biggest book habit is probably this: I'm a quote geek. Most of you know this, but I don't just mean that I like quotes. I'm obsessed with finding perfect, unique quotes in books. I love interesting quotes, funny quotes, inspiring quotes, and romantic quotes (sometimes.) Every time I open a new book, I get my cute sticky notes and put them next to me, and when I find a quote, I jot it down and put it in my quote book. Yes, I have a quote book. Well, now you know one of my bookish habits!! :)

Coming Up Next Week! (I promise)

Haven't even got on my computer for the week, I'm so sorry. Here is DEFINITELY what is coming up next week, I promise I will post ALL of these reviews. (Well, minus the Eye of Minds, because I just barely started that one and I don't know if I will be done. But I just finished Black Out, which was a cool dystopia read, which I gave five stars. Here are all the things coming up next week:

The Originals

15790886Book Title: The Originals
Author: Cat Patrick
Number of Pages: 304
Genres: YA Fiction, Romance, Sci-fi
Books like it: Icons by Margaret Stohl

Brief Synopsis from Goodreads:
A riveting new story from Cat Patrick, author of Forgotten and Revived.

17-year-olds Lizzie, Ella, and Betsey Best grew up as identical triplets... until they discovered a shocking family secret. They're actually closer than sisters, they're clones. Hiding from a government agency that would expose them, the Best family appears to consist of a single mother with one daughter named Elizabeth. Lizzie, Ella, and Betsey take turns going to school, attending social engagements, and a group mindset has always been a de facto part of life...

Then Lizzie meets Sean Kelly, a guy who seems to see into her very soul. As their relationship develops, Lizzie realizes that she's not a carbon copy of her sisters; she's an individual with unique dreams and desires, and digging deeper into her background, Lizzie begins to dismantle the delicate balance of an unusual family that only science could have created.

My Summary:

Bottom Line: A could've been interesting plot turned into a gooey teenage romance. Not worth reading again.

This is the story about three girls named Lizzie, Betsey, and Ella, that are clones of another girl (that is referred to as the Original.) Because cloning is technically illegal, the girls hide in public by doing a third of each day, mornings, afternoons, and evenings. For almost nine years, the girls go through life like this, accepting it as a normal fact of life.
Then Lizzie meets a boy and everything changes.

(gags.) Why is  every teenage heroine nowadays a boy crazy, lovesick girl with no thoughts except for her boyfriend?!?!?!

This book could have been so amazing. The sci-fi aspect was very interesting. I thought, just once, I could get a cool scientific story, and instead I got a character named Sean Kelly that I didn't even grow to like, and a cheesy romance that was so very disappointing. Sean was always sputtering cheesy pickup lines and kissing Lizzie. Seriously, girl, find a new guy that actually plays a little bit of hard to get. And then, after knowing him for like, a week, you tell him your biggest secret because of a little crush? Way to put your whole family in danger.

Overall, I did not find this book interesting. *Tosses book into the corner.* It had a lot of holes in it concerning the cloning, and a lot of parts were like, "WHAT?"

New Young Adult Releases.... November

Yes, I know. I am so awesome, I tell you new books so you don't have to go looking for them. Just kidding, you probably know what's coming out and you don't really care about this post. Stay tuned anyway, I'm going to tell you all of the books that I am currently reading, and also upcoming reviews next week. I know, I'm one of those people that reads a million books at a time instead of just sticking to one. (Don't worry, I never mix up plots or get confused or anything.) So first up, new November Releases!!!! My comments are in bold, and the synopsis is in Italic.

New Releases

Pawn By Aimee Carter

17679542YOU CAN BE A VII IF YOU GIVE EVERYTHING.

For Kitty Doe, it seems like an easy choice. She can either spend her life as a III in misery, looked down upon by the higher ranks and forced to leave the people she loves, or she can become a VII and join the most powerful family in the country.

If she says yes, Kitty will be Masked - surgically transformed into Lila Hart, the Prime Minister's niece, who died under mysterious circumstances. As a member of the Hart family, she will be famous. She will be adored. And for the first time, she will matter.

There's only one catch. She must also stop the rebellion that Lila secretly fostered, the same one that got her killed, and one Kitty believes in. Faced with threats, conspiracies and a life that's not her own, she must decide which path to choose and learn how to become more than a pawn in a twisted game she's only beginning to understand.

I was a fan of the Goddess Test, although it wasn't one of my favorites. I like Aimee Carter's writing, so I'm excited to see what she has to bring to the sci-fi dystopian genre.

After Eden by Helen Douglas
17286907

The day Eden met Ryan changed her world forever. Actually, not just her world. Ryan has time traveled from the future to save the world. In a few weeks, Eden’s best friend Connor will discover a new planet—one where human life is possible. The discovery will make him famous. It will also ruin the world as we know it. When Ryan asks Eden for help, she must choose between saving the world and saving her best friend’s greatest achievement. And a crush on Ryan complicates things more than she could have imagined. Because Connor is due to make the discovery after the girl he loves breaks his heart. That girl is Eden.

Grounded in a realistic teen world with fascinating sci-fi elements, After Eden is a heart-pounding love triangle that’s perfect for dystopian fans looking for something new to devour.

I'm not too sure about this one because I'm not a huge fan of love triangles, but I do like sci-fi. If you read this, tell me what you think.

The Naturals by Jennifer Lynn Barnes

13597723Seventeen-year-old Cassie is a natural at reading people. Piecing together the tiniest details, she can tell you who you are and what you want. But it’s not a skill that she’s ever taken seriously. That is, until the FBI come knocking: they’ve begun a classified program that uses exceptional teenagers to crack infamous cold cases, and they need Cassie.

What Cassie doesn’t realize is that there’s more at risk than a few unsolved homicides— especially when she’s sent to live with a group of teens whose gifts are as unusual as her own.

Sarcastic, privileged Michael has a knack for reading emotions, which he uses to get inside Cassie’s head—and under her skin. Brooding Dean shares Cassie’s gift for profiling, but keeps her at arm’s length.

Soon, it becomes clear that no one in the Naturals program is what they seem. And when a new killer strikes, danger looms closer than Cassie could ever have imagined. Caught in a lethal game of cat and mouse with a killer, the Naturals are going to have to use all of their gifts just to survive.

Reading through the reviews for this book, I've had mixed feelings. Some love this book and give it five stars, and some say the main character is emotionless. I think this sounds interesting and I might give it a try.

Twinmaker by Sean Williams
17296692High-stakes action combines with issues of friendship and body image in this timely and thought-provoking exploration of the intersection of technology and identity.

You can be Improved....

In a near-future world in which technology can transport you anywhere instantly, can a coded note enable you to change your body—to become taller, stronger, more beautiful? Clair is pretty sure the offer is too good to be true. But her best friend, Libby, is determined to give it a try, longing for a new, improved version of herself.

What starts as Libby’s dream turns into Clair’s nightmare when Libby falls foul of a deadly trap. With the help of Jesse, the school freak, and a mysterious—but powerful—stranger called Q, Clair’s attempt to protect Libby leads her to an unimagined world of conspiracies and cover-ups. Soon her own life is at risk, and Clair is chased across the world in a desperate race against time.

Action and danger fuel Sean Williams’ tale of technology, identity, and the lengths to which one girl will go to save her best friend.

This kind of reminds me of Uglies, and everyone knows I didn't really like that one very much. If the character development is better in this one, I will probably read it. Cover looks interesting.

This Wicked Game by Michelle Zink

This Wicked GameClaire Kincaid’s family has been in business for over fifty years.

The voodoo business.

Part of the International Guild of High Priests and Priestesses, a secret society that have practiced voodoo for generations, the Kincaid’s run an underground supply house for authentic voodoo supplies. Claire plays along, filling orders for powders, oils and other bizarre ingredients in the family store, but she has a secret.

She doesn’t believe.

Struggling to reconcile her modern sensibilities with a completely unscientific craft based on suspicion, Claire can’t wait to escape New Orleans – and voodoo – when she goes to college, a desire that creates almost constant conflict in her secret affair with Xander Toussaint, son of the Guild’s powerful founding family.

But when a mysterious customer places an order for a deadly ingredient, Claire begins to realize that there’s more to voodoo – and the families that make up the Guild – than meets the eye.

Including her own.

As she bands together with the other firstborns of the Guild, she comes face to face with a deadly enemy – and the disbelief that may very well kill her.

This is kind of vague but it still sounds... sort of interesting.

Revived by Cat Patrick

It started with a bus crash.
Daisy Appleby was a little girl when it happened, and she barely remembers the accident or being brought back to life. At that moment, though, she became one of the first subjects in a covert government program that tests a drug called Revive.
Now fifteen, Daisy has died and been Revived five times. Each death means a new name, a new city, a new identity. The only constant in Daisy's life is constant change.
Then Daisy meets Matt and Audrey McKean, charismatic siblings who quickly become her first real friends. But if she's ever to have a normal life, Daisy must escape from an experiment that's much larger--and more sinister--than she ever imagined.
From its striking first chapter to its emotionally charged ending, Cat Patrick's Revived is a riveting story about what happens when life and death collide.
I just finished reading Originals, which I will review next week. Technically I am not really currently reading this book. Let me explain by telling you what happened yesterday. I completely and totally forgot my book for reading period, (which almost never happens to me) and my science class, which is the class that I have reading period, was VERY conveniently having class in the library that day. I grabbed this book because I thought the cover looked interesting. I was so hooked from the first page that I got to page 85 by the time the period ended. Sadly, I already had five library books checked out that day, so I put it back on the shelf. I NEED TO GET IT BACK... the plot is so interesting.

A cute sci-fi love story with messages of self-discovery and taking a stand. Three stars.
